dismiss my boss.

Honey, I have bad news. I got a pink slip in my pay envelope today.
The boss says I'm a good worker, but our business is way down and
he just can't afford to keep us all working.

Leaders from across the
Taiwan Straits have called for joint efforts to tackle the impact
of the global financial crisis.

Wu Poh-hsiung, Chairman of
Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang party, made his call during the 4th
Cross-Straits Economic, Trade and Cultural Forum between the
Chinese mainland and Taiwan that started in Shanghai on
Saturday.

"We should conduct joint
cooperation to fight against the financial crisis by exploring
feasible patterns. We should also support each other in economy,
particularly to resolve the obstacle of financing for the bulk of
Taiwan business people with concrete measures."

The Kuomintang leader also
called on both sides from across the Straits to help expand the
markets by exchanges of investment, experience and technologies in
major projects.

Addressing the opening of the
two-day forum, Jia Qinglin, member of the Standing Committee of the
Communist Party of China Central Committee Political Bureau, also
stressed the importance of cross-Straits trade during such
period.

"Both sides should make
common efforts actively to deal with the financial crisis. At this
crucial moment, compatriots from across the Straits should find
ways to support each other and enhance bilateral trade of mutual
benefits, stabilizing economy and improving people's
lives."

The forum, themed "deepening
cross-Straits economic exchange and cooperation", is co-organized
by the Communist Party of China and the Kuomintang.

Topics include expanding
cross-Straits cooperation in the finance and service sectors,
encouraging two-way investment and regularizing economic exchanges
between the two sides.

It was initiated by Chinese
President Hu Jintao and former Kuomintang Chairman Lien Chan when
the two met in 2005. The first forum was held in 2006.

2. Downtown
Athens was peaceful on Sunday after another night of rioting at the
Polytechnic Institute.

Although guarded by police,
the central Christmas tree was still standing in the city's main
Syntagma square and men dressed in Santa Claus costumes were seen
entertaining children.

After a few days of relative
calm, Saturday night again saw clashes between Greek police and
rioters at Athens Polytechnic University.

Rioters were seen throwing
stones and Molotov cocktails at Greek police, as well as trying to
disturb officers with green laser pointers, and police responded
with tear gas.

Amalia Dafni, a local
resident said this year's Athens is quite different from the city
in previous years.

"It's not the Athens that
we've seen every year. Not the Athens that we know. The Athens we
know is much more lively, much more festive. This year it is a cold
Athens."

Violence in Greece broke out
after the police's fatal shooting of a 15-year-old boy on December
6th.

Protests over the boy's death
and the increasing economic hardship in Greece have led to the
worst rioting the country has seen in decades.

Hundreds of businesses have
been smashed, burned or looted, and gangs of youths fought running
battles with riot police firing tear gas every night for a
week.

3. Xinhua: Vouchers for Training Courses

The Chengdu Municipal government in Southeast China's Sichuan
Province recently announced that it would spend another 75 million
yuan, or more than 10 million U.S. dollars, next month on
employment training courses for 150,000 people.

Three groups of people will be eligible for the courses -- jobless
migrant workers who have returned home, unemployed university and
college graduates and laid-off local workers. Each of them would
receive a 500-yuan voucher to acquire new skills at various
training institutions.

A commentary in the Xinhua Daily Telegraph calls the action a
considerate measure that will yield long-term benefits. Amid the
current global financial crisis, many jobless migrant workers are
returning home for jobs, which have greatly intensified local
unemployment pressure. The article praises what it considers a
significant move by the Chengdu government to provide the
unemployed with chances to learn new skills and knowledge so they
can create better lives for themselves.

The commentary goes on to say that many migrant laborers have lost
their jobs because most of them are low-level workers involved in
the primary processing industry. Now that they are returning home,
they can make use of the lull in their employment to acquire some
new knowledge, it said. Improving their skills also would help
accelerate the country's industrial structure optimization, the
article said.

The commentary also says that efforts are needed to ensure the
effective implementation of this new measure, so that laid-off
workers can work through their difficult situation and gain new
opportunities for employment. The paper suggests that other local
governments follow suit to reduce local unemployment
pressure.
